GERMANY

Update: Industrial action by Air Traffic Controller staff at Frankfurt Airport continues to impact service as workers announced a new 48 hour strike from today, February 20th at 05:00 until Wednesday, February 21st at 05:00.  Due to the number of flight cancellations, some mail will be transported by ground which will likely result in delays.

GERMANY

Industrial action by the union representing DE Apron ATC staff at Frankfurt Airport began yesterday, February 16th, and continues to impact service today.  A walkout by workers at Frankfurt airport has resulted in the cancellation of some 300 flights today.  All inbound and outbound flights to and from Frankfurt, in particular, those to and from South America and Asia, are severely impacted. The strike is scheduled to end at 22:00 local CET.

ISRAEL

The general strike by public sector workers, which began on February 8th, ended on Sunday, February 12th. Delivery services have now returned to normal.

Some areas of New South Wales and Queensland are still flooded, causing road closures, isolating towns, and impacting Australia Post’s ability to deliver mail.  All parcels and mail delivery to the following postcode areas are impacted by the floods: 4488; 4490; 4486; 4465; 4468; 4480; 4487; 4497; 4492; 4481;2386-2409; 2443-2446; 2482.

ITALY

Poste Italiane has advised that winter weather conditions have worsened resulting in further delays in mail forwarding and delivery for both letter mail and parcels. Currently, the airports are open and flights are on schedule, however, from Friday, February 10th to Saturday, February 11th further delays in mail processing and delivery are expected. In particular, ground departures and arrivals to and from Milan OE due to heavy snowfall and freezing road conditions.

GREECE

Unions in Greece launched a 48-hour nationwide general strike today in protest of new austerity measures. Although flights continue to operate as normal, delays may be possible as thousands take to the streets in Athens.

AUSTRALIA

Due to a cage shortage at Sydney Office of Exchange (Australia Post), there is a delay in mail processing. The containers are used by the ground handlers to organize the traffic for collection and transportation to the Office of Exchange. As a result, Australia Post are 2 days behind in processing and believe their shortages will continue to at least the end of this week.

Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures across Europe, which began on February 3rd, have resulted in flight cancellations, airport and road closures, and power outages.

The most severe weather conditions have been reported in the following areas:
Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, the Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Poland
Western Europe: England, France, Italy and The Netherlands

BULGARIA & GREECE

Severe flooding has been reported in Bulgaria and Greece. Some heavy snowfall has also been reported in the Northern region of Greece resulting in some road closures and power outages.
